Should We Do "Last Chance" Marketing?
Does it just piss people off? Or is there a way to do it that's valuable?
We are bombarded with messages.
It’s relentless.
As ethical people, the conflict “should we add to the noise” is real.
But I don’t think it’s simply about a type of email we send, or the frequency, or the medium. No, not at all.
Let me explain in as few words as possible.
Intention matters, but not that much
People send us email.
We read the subject line, and we either
Ignore without even registering
Ignore while rolling our eyes
Click cynically
Click curiously
However you feel in that moment (either in your inbox, or social feed etc), we think everyone feels this way too.
I’m not judging; I fall for this “I’m the center of the universe” logic also.
People tell me, “I don’t want to email people too often because I don’t want to bother them” and I get it, this comes from a good place.
People say the same about posting on social.
But as people in business, this is lazy.
This realization to not “piss people off” is the starting point, not the conclusion.
Screw generic marketing advice
It’s our job to talk about our thing because it’s no one else’s responsibility to do it.
Most conversions come towards the end of a launch, before the deadline, just as the doors are closing. This has been proven with data over and over.
So it’s not a question of whether it works or not.
No, it’s about pissing people off who otherwise would be happy to stay in our audience.
There’s a bigger game at play here
The job of your content is to give people a good experience. This makes the right people see that you’re interesting, you’re valuable, and you’re worth subscribing to…
Basically, that you’re worth keeping around.
In return for this;
Some will engage publically, thus contributing to your credibility
Some will tell others about you, helping you grow
Some will buy, happy to put a lil’ money in your sky rocket (that’s Aussie parlance for ‘pocket’)
You think they’re shocked when you make an offer in your content?
You think they’re agast when you put a CTA to buy your thing?
You think they’re offended when a “Last Chance” email appears in their inbox?
No.
People know you sell stuff.
Don’t be afraid.
Personally, I don’t like most “Last Chance” emails. Keyword being: MOST
Because they’re just trying to steal my attention.
But there are some creators, mentors, and people who I follow who I welcome this kind of stuff even though I don’t want to buy.
I love knowing what’s happening in their world.
Because they give me more than they ask.
And I wanna see what happens next.
Your job is simply to make sure you give your audience multiples more than you ever ask from them.
If you do that ^^ no one will want to hit unsubscribe.
So you have good intentions, right?
Excellent.
Don’t keep your good intentions to yourself.
Show your audience.
You control how much you give to your audience!
Keep the value stacked on their side, and when you send them a “Last Chance” message, they won’t at all be upset…
In fact some will even be grateful.
:)

We’ve arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Here to celebrate the summer solstice festival known as Songkran in Thailand, but as “Pi Mai” here.
It’s basically the world’s biggest water fight, spanning multiple countries — and it begins tomorrow.
Today we have the official parade, lots of food and drinking, general end-of-year celebrations, and to our surprise… elephants!
Happy New Year, my Southeast Asian readers!
Cheers,
